SHOTOKAN

Gichin Funakoshi went to Japan and settled with 19 Kata, which were from Shorin school of Okinawa Karate.
Funakoshi wrote poetry and signed his name "shoto" meaning "Pine wave". During World War II, Funakoshi's dojo
was bombed by Allied forces. Upon re-building the students fixed a sign over the entrance which read
"SHOTOKAN"  or the "House of Shoto". The name stuck and has become the named used by practitioners
of "Funakoshi's" teachings.
